These particular works are exploring the idea of family. Family is something that has always been quite abstract to me. It has mostly felt like Something I once had and misplaced, leaving impressions that I have chosen to explore through this body of work, and through 'Self-Portraits as Ancestral Karma' as well.
Family Portraits explores the shortage of 'family' through a physical manifestation of absence. There are picture frames without photos, only balls of colorful yarn representing the void. These frames bring to the surface what has been lost. There is a knowing something should be there, but not being able to discern what, (or who) that is. The placement of Family Portraits is meant to mimic the way typical family photos would hang on the wall(s) in a home.
